CURIOUS

HUMAN

I am constantly hungry to learn more about the world around me, and this deep sense of curiosity has been foundational to my career and my approach to life in general. If you’re here, I assume you’re curious too, so here’s a little background about me:

I write and produce Practical Engineering (alongside host Grady Hillhouse), where I help to make videos about infrastructure and the built world around us. We are one of the largest engineering YouTube channels in the world, and I am thrilled to spend my time working on such a brilliant project.

I am also a co-founder and Chief Communications Officer at Perforated, a startup built around a novel, neuroscience-inspired technique to optimize neural network performance, making AI smarter, more efficient, and just better.

I host Nerd Nite Pittsburgh, a hilarious, fun event where nerds of all flavors come together to enjoy social games, adult beverages, and TED-style lectures with a comedic twist. Past speaker topics have ranged from dinosaur paleontology to snail sex to astrophysics to euphonium to medieval fencing, and beyond. It’s super fun.

I am a freelance electric bassist, pianist, and general music enthusiast. I’ve played in all kinds of bands, including Guaracha Latin Dance Band (salsa), The Commonheart (soul/rock), and various other groups spanning many styles. I grew up in a very musical household; my father Murray Crewe was a professional classical musician, playing bass trombone in several major symphony orchestras, with the bulk of his career at the Pittsburgh Symphony. My work in music is deeply important to me and clearly connects to that deeper, curious mindset.

I’m an avid birder, cyclist, crossworder, and pet owner (dog AND cat). Most importantly, I’m a husband and a father. I’m grateful to enjoy such a curious life, and I’m curious about what brings you to my little webpage, too.
